Running shoe finder

Tell us how you run and what you run in now. We compare your answers with more than 220 road and trail shoes from about 20 brandsand show you up to three picks, each with the reasons it matched and the trade-offs that apply to you. It takes less than 10 minutes and it's free.

What we ask

  • How much you run, where, and what you're training for.
  • The shoes you run in now: brand, model, size and width, how they feel, and what you'd change. If you can't remember, you can skip it.
  • Whether your next pair is for road or trail.
  • Brands you want to avoid, and any shoe that has caused you discomfort.

What you get

  • Up to three shoes, never two versions of the same model.
  • The reasons each one matched your answers.
  • The trade-offs that apply to you.
  • Alternatives worth considering, when we find good ones.
  • A link to the manufacturer or another primary source for each pick.

How the picks are chosen

First we remove what your answers rule out: a brand you told us to avoid, a shoe that isn't made in your width, a shoe you asked us to keep out. Then written rules compare what's left with your answers, one rule at a time. A shoe needs at least two matches that set it apart before we call it a personalized pick. When we can't meet that bar, we say so. The full method is on How we recommend.

Not tied to one brand

Most shoe finders are run by a brand or a store and show you that brand's shoes. This one covers more than 220 road and trail shoes from about 20 brands, including ASICS, Brooks, Hoka, New Balance, Nike, Saucony, Salomon and Altra.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't analyse your gait, diagnose a condition, or promise to prevent injury. If you tell us about a current injury, recommendations get more cautious, and that's as far as it goes.

More than shoes

The same profile also covers apparel, socks, fuel, hydration, watches and accessories, recovery and race-day gear. More answers are in the frequently asked questions.
